UPC-A Introduction

UPC is short for Universal Product Code. It is composed of varying width of bars and space to express different information. UPC-A is a standard form for UPC barcode family. A UPC-A can have several parts, the left quiet zone, the start guard, the left digit zone, the middle guard, the right digit zone, the stop guard and the right quiet zone. The middle guard makes the symbology symmetry, the start and stop guard guarantee the barcode can scan from left to right and from the right to left.

  • Download UPC-A barcode from Terrek.com and unzip it.
  • Open the setup file and install the document.
  • Open your Microsoft Excel, click start button and choose Excel option, on the left side of document, please select add-ins, find the Terrek.Excel 2007 Addin, click it and click ok.
  • Open the Microsoft Excel again, you will find the encoding add-ins under the Add-ins tab.
  • Click the Add-ins tab, you will see the barcode panel.
  • Click the barcode panel, the barcode settings appear on the right of the Excel.
  • Input UPC-A into the barcode type and input the barcode data.

UPC-A basic settings

UPC-A Character Set:
Numeric Characters: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
UPC-A Data Length:
11 digits only, excluding the last checksum digit

UPC-A size settings

The size settings include image width, image height, bar width, bar height, Text Margin, Left Margin, Right Margin, Top Margin and Bottom Margin. All of these parameters have default value, but you can change them to meet your needs.

UPC-A text settings

The human readable text can be enabled and disabled in Microsoft Excel. The default value is enabled, it you do not want it show in the document, you can choose false option.

UPC-A image settings

  • Rotate setting: the rotate orientation can be 0, 90, 180 and 270.
  • Resolution setting: you may type the resolution in dpi as you want.
  • Color setting: including the color of background, foreground and text color. The default color is white, black and black respectively, but you can change them to maximize your barcode.
